Key Milestones
Explore Our History Through Key Events
1950s
The Rockville Baseball Association began in the early 1950s when a group of individuals became interested in bringing organized baseball to Rockville. Harry Bean and Durant Burton, along with their peers, formed six teams of local boys and called themselves the Twinbrook Boys Club. After a while, more boys wanted to join so additional teams were formed. To accommodate the addition of these new teams, an association was created in 1954, and called The Rockville Boys Baseball Association.
1960s
In 1969, Rockville opened the city’s first lighted ballpark, still known as Dogwood Park. Several RBBA volunteers and coaches joined together to build press boxes and to dig ditches for the underground cables needed to provide power for the scoreboards. A local lumberyard donated the material for the press boxes, and the Coca-Cola Company provided the scoreboards. Dogwood Park, as well as the other city ball fields, are still maintained by the city.
1970s
The first All-Star games were played at Woodley Gardens over the July 4th weekend. The Greater Washington Baseball Tournament was introduced so the RBBA players could experience outside competition. Also during the seventies, an instructional league was developed for the youngest age group.
1980s
The name of the Rockville Boys Baseball Association, was changed to the Rockville Baseball Association, due to the large number of girls participating in the game.
1990s
Baseball was offered in the fall so players were no longer limited to one season a year.
2010s
CYO baseball joined RBBA to infuse a large, new group of baseball teams to RBBA. Teams from St. Bernadette’s, St. Elizabeth’s, The Heights, St. Jane’s, etc. still participate in RBBA. Partnerships were established with the Washington Nationals and Dick’s Sporting Goods to provide support to the organization.
2020s
RBBA almost shuts down after 70 years of existence due to mismanagement of the organization. Entirely new volunteer leadership took on the burden to save RBBA. Major accomplishments include:
Financial - New accountant and bookkeeping firms.
Constitution and By-Laws - Review and rewriting to meet best practices.
Partnerships - With local baseball organizations - Big Train Baseball, the Rockville Express, Rockville High School, Rockville Baseball Club.
Partnerships - With community organizations that support families - Platoon22, Nourish Now, Leveling the Playing Field. Students can also earn SSL hours at Nourish Now and Leveling the Playing Field.
Website - Outdated, mobile “unfriendly” site replaced with user-friendly website listing partners and sponsors.
Cancelled Events - Return of events such as Opening Day Celebration, photo days and clinics.
Giveaways - Introduction of free RBBA car magnets and collectible challenge coins.
Softball - Investment of $10,000 of softball catcher’s equipment (girls were previously using boys catchers gear).
Logo - Revamped to incorporate softball as a part of RBBA.
Coach Engagement - Scheduling process, uniform selection, year end celebration.
Engagement - Outreach to independent, outside baseball organizations to work together for the benefit of youth baseball and softball.
